Well, it's been a week since I last posted so I should probably share what we've been up to.
Monday I decided to venture out to WalMart, which I haven't done in a while. Well, I can say WITHOUT a DOUBT that doing all that walking around the store wasn't a good idea. I had SO many contrx on Monday afternoon and evening. So I guess I'll have to make my trips to the stores VERY well planned/thought out.
Tuesday we went out to dinner at Leo's with Doug & Kathy B., whom we met through MOSAIC (through St. Pat's), and while there, we noticed that a hive appeared on Nicholas' hand. Then I noticed a couple on his face. Then, a couple popped up on his arm. That made me nervous! We immediately took him out of his seat, used a TON of wipes to wipe down his hands, his arms, and his face. Also, his high chair (we bring in our OWN seat, due to his allergy). I gave him some Benadryl and then slathered some on the hives themself.
We have NO idea what caused the reaction. We've eaten at Leo's dozens of times without having any problems, so I did contact them the next day to let them know what happened and they were SO great! They suggested that we tell them when we arrive that we've got a severe food allergy, so they can take EXTRA care to prepare our food.
After dinner, Nick brought Nicholas home and then I went to the MOSAIC meeting for the first time in a LONG time. MOSAIC was something that was critical to me and Nick being able to grieve in a healthy way. To be able to talk to other parents whom have also lost children; only THEY can really understand our pain.
Since it's been pretty chilly and I've got to stay off my feet a majority of the day, I decided it was time to try coloring with Nicholas again. The last time I tried it, he not only ate a tip of a
crayon, but he also licked the Tadoodles markers. His entire mouth was brown and purple as a result!
This time, was a much better success. We started out with the Crayola ColorWonder Markers and paper. Since the markers ONLY create color on the special paper, it's less messy. The ONLY trouble was that my little boy is too smart for his mommy! He kept trying to color with the end of the marker that shows you what color will appear, as opposed to the end with the special ink. So, I thought, let's switch to regular paper and crayons. He did SO great! He colors with BOTH ends of the crayons, and likes to do lines/arcs back and forth. What I LOVE the best about his picture is that he wanted to use all the colors - red, blue, green, orange, yellow, and purple!
On Friday, I asked Nick if he would be up for a trip to the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum and he said we could try it and see if Nicholas would enjoy it. We decided to park on the street, just down the block from the Museum, and walk there.
Funny aside: we parked RIGHT across the street from a lot that's permit parking M-F, but is open on the weekends and we didn't even notice. In our rush to get Nicholas out of the cold, I forgot to put money in the meter. So we got a $10 parking ticket while parked right across the street from a free lot! Silly!
Anyway...we spent MOST of our time in the Pre-School area of the museum. They had a water play area, a large indoor play structure, a small play structure, an area for babies, a place to read, and a Lego table. Nicholas' favorite thing *seemed* to be the water play area. We put a waterproof smock on him and he started playing right away. Of course, Nick is SUCH a good Dad and was right there with him! We thought later, that perhaps we should have put a smock on him too!
I'll upload more pictures of our trip to AAHOM soon and will post a link here.
While at the museum, we went to the 'snack' area to give Nicholas a little something to eat until we were able to get back home. While we were doing that, we noticed that he was getting hives, AGAIN.
We decided to come home, and then of course, we had a restless little boy on our hands. He didn't want to take his nap! He finally did, and then when he woke, we prepared his dinner.
While he was eating dinner (leftovers from Friday night) we noticed that his hands were becoming red and looked swollen, and then after he was finished, we noticed some hives on his left leg, and on the back of both legs. We decided to take some pictures b/c the ones on the back of his legs were SO big.

I also decided to call the on-call allergist, b/c he'd had the rxn on Tuesday, and it seems like he's getting hives a LOT lately. So...the allergist called me back and we spoke about what's been happening with him.
She didn't think that Saturday's rxn was necessarily food related, since the hives were not on his face and he didn't have his 'traditional' anaphylactic rxn.
We also discussed that he had an outbreak of hives following his viral infection right after Christmas. She did say that sometimes, those hives can continue for quite some time, as long as several weeks. So she did say that it *could* be that.
In the meantime, we're to start him on a daily dose of Zyrtec, and try to make sure we monitor him even MORE than normal. We did give him another dose of Benadryl last night before bed. The hives were gone by this AM, so that's a good sign.
I'm also going to call the allergist tomorrow; the on-call allergist said that she'd make a note that we were going to call and they'd try to get us in for an appointment as SOON as possible.
Today, so far, has seemed 'uneventful', which is a great thing! He's currently napping, so I should end this post and get dinner started. I'll try to get an update up this week!
